The fact that two people attempting to force effective oversight were murdered in well-planned attacks, within less than a year of each other, and that in both cases the people who ordered the murders are still unknown, shows that Europe is experiencing a crime and corruption emergency and it is only a matter of time before someone else is killed.’Read more:Scottish firm implicated in Azeri Laundromat held an account at Pilatus BankMalta washes its hands off PilatusDaphne was investigating dirty money – Il Sole 24 OreFor this reason, the family of murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia say they had filed a Suspicious Transaction Report last month with Latvia’s anti-money laundering authorities in an effort to hold one of its banks to account. The 31-page STR sent to Latvia’s Office for the Prevention of Laundering of Proceeds Derived from Criminal Activity, outlines the names of individuals that Caruana Galizia had been investigating and their connection to a coordinated money laundering network run by the Latvian ABLV Bank.  The family believes that those involved ‘are connected to her subsequent murder.’Much like the efforts of Caruana Galizia to investigate the similarly dubious Pilatus Bank and her eventual coordinated assassination, Latvian lawyer Martin Bunkus had also sought to bring an end to ABLV Bank. Bunkus was latterly murdered ‘in a well-planned attack, just seven months later.’They state that this will be the only way ‘to continue forcing accountability and to activate judicial authorities, though the responsibility for achieving this is not ours alone.’They conclude by saying that ‘We hope that this report brings new evidence to light, helps authorities across Europe bring criminals to justice and helps authorities prevent more murders by taking action to end impunity for the crimes and criminal networks that Daphne Caruana Galizia investigated and exposed. We also hope that others will recognise that they too are able to force accountability and will be inspired to take the necessary action to end impunity and restore the rule of law.’WhatsApplast_img
