Massachusetts Focuses on Improving Bases Efficiency

first_imgMassachusetts officials lately have been looking at ways to trim the operating costs of the state’s six military installations.“If we can do some things to help the installations be more efficient — we’ve worked on some energy-efficiency improvements, we’re doing some other things through the military task force — that’s going to help them whether or not there is a BRAC and it will be a positive to have reduced operating costs if and when a BRAC happens,” Marty Jones, CEO of MassDevelopment, told reporters on Tuesday following a meeting of the Massachusetts Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force at the Statehouse. While Jones said the state is pursuing the efficiency initiative without regard to the timing of a future round of base closures, she acknowledged that the prospect of a new BRAC is never far from officials’ thoughts.“Everybody worries about BRAC, so it’s something we’re certainly aware of and thinking about,” Jones said, reported the Sentinel & Enterprise. In addition to Jones, Gov. Charlie Baker (R), Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash, Rep. Niki Tsongas (D), state lawmakers and other state officials, and representatives from the federal government and various branches of the military were at the closed meeting.“The purpose of the meeting was to really bring everybody up to speed on the activities that have been going on and how we’re working to help promote and strengthen all of our military installations in the commonwealth,” Jones said.
