Arsenal 2-2 Manchester City: Demichelis rescues deserved point for the champions

first_img1 Martin Demichelis was the unlikely hero for Manchester City as the Argentine defender’s late header rescued a point in a thrilling draw at Arsenal. The Gunners went into the game desperate to finally make an impression against one of the so called big boys, after only taking 26 points out of a possible 90 over the past five seasons against sides in the top four. And with £16million deadline day signing Danny Welbeck leading the line, there was a renewed sense of optimism around the Emirates. The new arrival looked bright as Arsenal made a quick start and on 14 minutes the type of chance he would have dreamed of was gifted on a platter. An errant pass put the former Manchester United striker clear through on goal, and though his chip over Joe Hart was beautifully executed, it bounced agonisingly off the inside of the post and into the England goalkeeper’s grateful hands. The goal would have been magnificent but, in truth, Welbeck could have buried the opportunity had he placed the ball past his Three Lions colleague. And sure enough, Welbeck regretted his wastefulness when City took the lead through Sergio Aguero on 28 minutes – the Argentine striker coolly lifting the ball over Wojciech Szczesny from Jesus Navas’ cross.Moments later, City could have been two up when some brilliant one-touch passing released the silky David Silva, whose low snapshot was just saved by Szczesny.Arsenal kept on plugging away, but it was difficult to see where an equaliser was going to come from until suddenly things clicked perfectly into place with a beautiful team move.Jack Wilshere, who had looked bright without any end product, burst clear from midfield, exchanged a one-two with Aaron Ramsey, skipped past former team-mate Gael Clichy and lofted the ball brilliantly over Hart. The England midfielder has been subject to much criticism, but the goal lifted his game further and he soon turned provider to put Arsene Wenger’s side ahead. It was another goal of beauty as the 22-year-old perfectly cushioned his header over the City defence for Sanchez to smartly smash an excellent side-foot volley past Hart on 74 minutes. With the Emirates bouncing, Wilshere was dominating matters and Arsenal could have found a third when he flipped a cheeky through ball over top, only for Ramsey to just fall short of connecting with it.In a fashion befitting of Premier League champions, City refused to roll over and with seven minutes of normal time remaining they got their reward as Demichelis climbed highest to head home.Szczesny did well to get a glove to it but, unbeknown to the Poland international, in doing so he took the ball away from Mathieu Flamini, who was covering the post and would have headed the effort clear.Shortly before the equaliser there was another worry as Gunners defender Mathieu Debuchy turned his ankle and received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off.Welbeck immediately looked to restore Arsenal’s lead and make himself an instant hero, but his curling effort just skimmed over the bar.It was the England forward’s last action as he left to a warm round of applause, but the final moments were edgy round the Emirates as City looked to find a winner.First Aleksandar Kolarov rattled the post with a rasping effort and then the woodwork rescued Arsenal again as Laurent Koscielny’s toe poke beyond his own keeper fortunately bounced back for Szczesny. But despite a breathless end to the match neither side could find a decisive third, as the match deservedly finished all square.
