SANTA CLARITA – Laura Scott, a veteran American Cancer Society volunteer, will serve as chairwoman for the 2006 Relay For Life in the Santa Clarita Valley. Committee meetings have begun for the June 3-4 event and subcommittee heads have been named. Relay For Life, a 24-hour rally and fundraiser for the cancer society, will move this year to Santa Clarita Central Park, a location with room for for more teams to camp out. Scott is a cancer survivor who facilitates Bosom Buddies, a group for breast cancer patients and survivors. She has been involved with the relay since she participated on the Bosom Buddies team in 2001. “People gave me so much help in the beginning through support groups. I became involved as a way of giving back,” she said. “The more I became involved, the more I wanted to keep on giving. Through events like relay, there will be a cure.” Committee leaders so far are Lisa Burke, accounting; Nancy Coulter, Cheri Fleming and Donna Ashmore, corporate development; Mike Hill, first aid; Thelma Price and Judi Nugent, food; Pam Ross Smith, Kids Kamp; John Fortman, logistics; Kim Crookston, luminary bags; and Andie Bogdan, luminaria ceremony. Scott is seeking leaders to organize entertainment and games during the event and to coordinate event volunteers. Residents who would like to help with event planning can call her at (661) 296-0081. The relay committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. April 18, May 9 and 23 in the Foundation Building at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, 238454 McBean Parkway, Valencia. The meetings are open to anyone interested in helping organize this year’s relay, which organizers hope will raise $550,000 for the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem.
