The cemetery is located at 1401 Mimosa Park Road. The cemetery owner is responsible upkeep, but the owner has filed for bankruptcy.Tuscaloosa city leaders said they believe this bankruptcy may be the problem.Ann Merriweather is one of those concerned residents, because she frequently visits her father and grandparents who are buried at the cemetery. She said upkeep has gotten so bad that she had to take matters into her own hands.“The last couple of times I have been down there, the conditions have been awful,” she said. “I have literally had to get on my hands and knees and pull up grass and cut back weeds. I have had to take ant repellent to put on ants. The upkeep is ridiculous.”Grass has gotten so tall and thick in some places names on headstone can barely be seen.Cedar Oak Cemetery sits in District 2, and Tuscaloosa City Councilwoman Raevan Howard said that while it’s a travesty, the city can’t do much about it.Howard sent a statement to WVUA 23 saying:“This being a private cemetery, its not the city’s responsibility to cut it and maintain it.“However, as Councilwoman, I am urging the owners to respond quickly to the community’s request to cut the grass and do a better job with the upkeep of the cemetery. All cemeteries should be maintained with dignity and respect.”last_img read more
